Backstories Free Taster - Like Magic

Find the lost little girl in this story.

Two girls step out back of the children's home chewing gum like their lives depend on it.  Kitty leads the way of course, swaggering down three dusty steps to the cracked concrete with its overflowing bins and buzzing flies.  The yard is open to the street, has been since last winter when the fence got boosted for firewood.  A rat scuttles from one bin to the next.  Kitty raises an eyebrow.

Still chewing, she eases a half-smoked Lucky Strike from the pack, lights her match on the wall and takes a long draw.  She doesn't offer Jeanie.  Why should she?  Snipes are a dime a pack, and anyway, Jeanie's only a kid.

Kitty's nearly fifteen with bumps in all the right places, and she makes the most of them.  Leaning against the wall in her thin summer dress she shakes her dyed blonde hair and sucks on her smoke through bright red lips.

Like Marlene Dietrich, Jeanie thinks, impossibly sexy through that smoky haze.

Jeanie doesn't have lipstick, or smokes or bubbies or even a dress, just mousy brown hair and a pair of boy's dungarees, so worn they're white as much as blue.  But she has her dreams…
